Revisiting Bishan Junction 8
I got spontaneous and decided to go Junction 8 for dinner and also to check out their NTUC finest. J8 was THE shopping centre I hung out with my friends when I was in secondary school. I would eat at the pastamania on most afternoons, watch movies, and sometimes even meet boys from the boys’ schools in bishan. But those boys are mostly my friend’s friends and I’m usually just tagging along for the fun part of teasing my friends, and also to lend some support/courage of meeting boys. Oh, the (in)glorious days of girls’ high school! But J8 was a pretty huge part of my secondary school life, and I was glad to revisit it.
They had some princess event for little girls, and I could see the little princesses were totally into their role, doing curtseys and parading in their costumes. Apparently it was a real workshop to turn little girls into princesses, with wigs and complete makeup. The only thing in my mind though was, it must have cost a bomb for the parents-of-royalty wannabes.
I was SO excited to try the home-brewed soups from ‘Chinatown Soupmaster’ in the foodcourt. Their soups are MSG-free and boiled with love. But I was disappointed, the soup was pretty tasteless and it was nothing special other than the pumpkin rice that they serve with their soup. A classic example of being tricked by impressive and fancy names. You’d expect something better from a stall named ‘Soupmaster’ right?
I regret not trying other stuff like the fish soup stall, so many people were queueing up for it, and I saw PM Lee’s face in a newspaper cutting, so it must be good. If I ever go there again, I’d try that.
After dinner, Hammy and I walked around and I did a little window shopping. Then we found ourselves gravitating towards NTUC Fairprice Finest. Haha went in to get some snacks and check out their new selection of products, because if I’m not wrong, the previous NTUC was just a normal one, not the ‘finest’.
We were absolutely delighted to find that there are self-checkout stations and now you could do your shopping without long queues! We skipped waiting at the manned cashiers and got out of NTUC in 5 mins.
Check out this boy’s delighted smile when he realized he could be hands-on with the barcode scanner.
Our grocery all ready in the plastic bags! =) We left NTUC with a big grin on our faces, especially when we walked past all the other shoppers queuing up for the cashiers. Single basket purchases SHOULD go to these self-checkout stations. They are pretty cool and easy to manage.
Oh, and this is my cute box of biscuits, an impulse buy. :P
