Be Positively Teal – Raising Awareness for Ovarian Cancer
I have so much exciting news in store for you guys that I don’t know where to start!! Haha okay let’s do it step by step. Last Friday, I attended ‘Positively Teal Bloggers Event’ at La Maison Du Canele @ Shaw. It was AMAZING. I got so much out of it and I’m going to share.
Why teal? It’s the colour representing the fight against ovarian cancer! If you don’t know what teal is, just check out my profile picture on the top right! Haha ——————————–>>>>>>>>
I know nobody likes to talk about cancer… You probably have half a mind to close this page now, BUT hold up! It doesn’t hurt to know just a little more, right?
HERE’S THE TRUTH
You probably haven’t heard much on Ovarian cancer in Singapore due to the lack of TV advertisements and broadcasts. The ovaries are also hidden in the body such that most women possess the notion of “What you can’t see can’t harm you.”
But the truth is, it can.
Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer among Singapore women, and 1 in 80 women face it in their lifetime. Those are pretty high odds, I’d say.
There are CURRENTLY NO TESTS that you can do, unlike breast cancer where you can go for mammogram, or cervical cancer, where you go for a Pap Smear, to detect ovarian cancer. That makes it so much scarier, and that’s also why patients usually go to the doctor when the symptoms become too unbearable. And that’s when the disease is already at Stage III or IV.
THE ONLY WAY. Is to recognize the symptoms by yourself. This is crucial, because sometimes our bodies give us signals that something is not quite right, but how many of us have actually listened? This is especially so with most older people. Even if they knew that there was something not right, they wouldn’t approach a doctor. That’s where you, the younger generation comes in, to help educate them and encourage them to see a doctor when they feel unwell. And unfortunately, cancer isn’t bias – it attacks women in their 20s too.
Treating ovarian cancer at its early stages can exponentially increase survival rates and patients are able to lead normal lives after that.
KNOW IT & RECOGNIZE IT
Here’s the most important part of my post. If there’s only one part you should read, this is it.
What are the symptoms?
- Bloated feeling in the abdomen
- Abdominal distension
- Abdominal discomfort
- Backache or ache in the legs
- Change of bowel habits
- Urinary complaints
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Loss of weight
I was damn upset when I saw these symptoms. They are so freaking non-specific! Every woman probably has experienced the above symptoms before, and how do we know if it’s the real deal?
Even the doctors had no answer.

I guess the only way is to be vigilant about your body’s signals and don’t ignore them if you or your loved ones are experiencing two or more of the above symptoms concurrently.
THE EVENTS
Canele, one of the sponsors of Positively Teal campaign, hosted the closed-door event for us on Friday. A total of about 20 bloggers were present, and I was really honoured to be able to attend. Thank you Ju Ann for the invite. =)
To show their support, the Executive pastry chef of Canele, Christophe Grilo, launched a newly created Teal coloured macaroon! Along with the teal macaroons, we also had cute cupcakes and finger food. All of them are too pretty to be eaten!!
Sweet feature of the day: Teal macaroons with a hint of mint and raspberry in the middle! The raspberry balanced the sweetness of the butter cream and the result was a a perfect combination of flavours.
Pretty cupcakes!! I would have ALL if I could, but I only took the pink coloured one.
Didn’t try this cuz it’s all sugaaar that melts in your mouth.
Cesar chicken mini-wraps.
Le chef proud of his creations.
Adorable illustrations on the walls of Canele.
Ovarian cancer survivor Lim Ai Ling, who gave a splendid speech on how she overcame the disease. She was diagnosed 3 years ago at 28 years old. What touched me was how she ended her speech with heartfelt thanks to the doctors present that day who saved her life.
Part of her speech:
“Being young doesn’t immunize you from cancer. I’m a living proof. I’m very lucky that I did not ignore the signs and symptoms that my body was showing.”
That seriously struck me and gave me goosebumps. I admire her for her courage and how normal she is now. She found a job, and a man who accepts her for who she is. I was lucky to sit next to her during the event and had the chance to converse with her. Amazing lady.
Then it was lucky draw time!! Haha What a surprise, I was the first to be called up to receive a consolation prize of Choco Marvel chocolate drink to ease menstrual cramps. Lololol. Thanks Samantha for helping me take this photo! She was really friendly and kind :) Other bloggers were luckier to win handbags from BATA and watches worth $108!
With A/Prof Jeffrey Low and Ai Ling.
So lucky to have spent such a meaningful evening with the peeps from Singapore Cancer Society, doctors and bloggers. The organizers really put in a lot of effort to prepare notes for us, and a FAT goody-bag filled with lovely stuff. More importantly, they want us to spread the message that we ladies must be aware of our own bodies, and never be afraid. What will come will come, but we must fight it. And in order to give a good fight, we must be equipped with the necessary knowledge. If you still do not know what knowledge I’m talking about, please read my post again from the top!! Haha
Anyway, the campaign doesn’t end here. They have something exciting coming up!
They are bringing the party to ZOUK! I’d definitely want to see doctors letting their hair down. *QUICK, think of the doctors in Greys Anatomy* Haha AND AND I might just be walking down that runway dressed in KissJane apparels alongside inspiring cancer survivors.
Purchase the ZOUK tickets here and the proceeds will go to Singapore Cancer Society in support of the fight against Ovarian Cancer.
So spread the message and see you there!

I’m going to reveal what KissJane has in store for you, in my next post. So stay tuned! =D
FYP Buzz!
Hello!
I just changed my blog layout and got rid of the pictures at the side cuz I felt they were getting annoying! Haha basically, they were getting boring. What do you all think of this new theme? Is it better?
I haven’t blogged for eons (okay, 2+ weeks?) and things were just getting stagnant with me being so busy with bioentre and then, now poring over which FYP (Final Year Project) topics to choose and having numerous interviews with professors.
I think the whole process of choosing FYP is really fun! Although it can get a little nerve-wrecking, like how we have to read all the 300+ projects available and then picking out our top 10 favourites. Then after that it’s emailing profs requesting for interviews, and then it’s down to the actual meeting the profs at their labs, which includes NTU, AVA, NUS, NHC (National Heart Centre), and many many more.
The fun part is reading the project names and briefs, there are really cool ones like genetically programming skin cells to become heart cells (this is cutting-edge!), and fun ones like going around Singapore’s parks and nurseries to collect plant samples for detection of a pathogenic bacteria. The there are those that are purely literature reviews, which you read tons and tons of journal papers, and then write a balanced review on the topic. They have really interesting topics for that as well, like “Are the nanoparticles in sunscreens really good for us?”, or “Adipose tissue: Changing the public’s perception of fat” etc.
Oh OH there’re even projects like going to Night Safari to observe the animals there, (their estrus cycles and how they behave), so that we can suggest a method to introduce them a mate! Haha but those are probably gonna be so popular that maybe 20 ppl are grabbing it and it’s all down to chance, cuz projects are assigned via balloting when more than 1 student applies for it.
I get excited just thinking of the possibilities. Haha, doing a project on your own is so much more fulfilling and interesting than just studying and sitting for exams…
I can’t wait to be assigned my own FYP and I’ll tell you guys what it is when the time comes :)
Thanks for staying with me. <3
Bioentre module.
Okay this is going to be my space to rant and let out all my worries for a while.
First thing.
I know I haven’t been updating!! Sorry.. But I just haven’t got the time, and I’m also currently working on 4 more orders for iPhone pouches :) So pardon me, I think I’m just gonna have to update during weekends, tentatively.
Second thing.
I’m going for the module Bioentrepreneurship orientation tomorrow! It’s a whole-day event from 9am to 5pm. Omg. I didn’t realize even the orientation’s gonna take up the entire day. Then in my recess week, it’s gonna be 9-5pm for whole 6 days.
I am freaking nervous.
I just checked the photo gallery for classmates who are taking it as well, and all I see are so many unfamiliar faces. :’( I know I’m supposed to go there and make friends, but I am probably not the most sociable character ever. I stutter, I stone, I panic!
And I thought by registering myself for this course, I will have more opportunities to muster my guts and (force myself to) be brave. Cuz this course has a couple of group presentations, and class participation, I figured that I would have to speak up, train myself a little to not be such a scatterbrain. But no matter how determined I was to put myself through that, here I am, the day before the orientation, having some sort of a small panic attack.
I hope I meet good people and make good friends. And I pray that my module will go smoothly. *crosses fingers*.
I can do it. I can do it! Gambatte!!!

Marine life is colourful~
Shot photos of these beautiful marine dwellers at the basement of Plaza Singapura.

Marine life has always fascinated and at the same time frightened me. Fascinated because of the sheer brilliant colours and different forms that these sea creatures can take. Frightened because the ocean is another world in which we would need tools (oxygen tanks etc.) to aid us in exploring, otherwise we would die. In the ocean, we are at the mercy of nature, and that is why diving trips possess a high degree of danger.
.
.
When I first saw this photo as Hammy’s Macbook wallpaper, I thought it was a cartoon character. Cuz I think it’s so cute!! And I never would have thought it’s a real living organism in the sea. It’s called a Nudibranch. Even the name is so adorable :) They are actually related to snails, but had discarded their shells millions of years ago.
.
.
I can’t believe this is a living thing. So brightly coloured! Nudibranchs obtain their colours from the food that they consume and sometimes store their preys’ poison to use it for their own purposes. I think that’s just amazing.
.
.
I kinda think Pikachu was inspired from this.
.
.
So scary!! But they look like they were made out of Plasticine/Playdoh.
.
.
Okay this is totally what a Yeerk would look like.
.
.
I think Nudibranchs are super cute, but they are not harmless for sure. Predators should know better just by their deadly colours. View more photos of Nudibranchs here.
You know how nature can produce so many colours for animals, for example there can be red/pink/green birds/fishes/flowers? What a sad thing that humans are so limited in skin colour. Will humans evolve to have extreme skin colours, like Mystique in X-men? Haha then I wouldn’t mind being pink or bright orange. Better still, able to change colours whenever we like!!
Nice. =D
Internship 101- Update (2)
After deciding that I didn’t want to venture into the science research industry, I was hoping that my internship would just fade away. I was dreading it. I don’t know why I’m so afraid of going into a new environment all over again, just like when I started out in my previous company doing part-time accounting work during holidays. Guess it is interacting with new people that gives me the jitters.
.
.
HOWEVER, they didn’t simply forget me, like I thought they would. I guess they are really in need of interns. The person called and asked me to give them a reply by this week. In my fluster, I didn’t reject him and still answered when I was available for work. GAhhh… But the call was so untimely; I was having my brows plucked at that time!!
.
.
What a fickle-little-fly I am. I still remember being so excited about a science internship a few months back! Now I feel bad about letting my senior down, who was the one encouraging and egg-ing me for on for it; and the lovely aunties from my previous company whom I told I was taking up a research internship this time round.
.
.
But I figured there’s no point in doing a research internship if I wasn’t going to go into research after I graduate right? Plus there isn’t an allowance, so I’ll literally be working for free. I’d rather find some waitressing job or try to make some money by selling vintage clothes. Or simply just have much more time to blog, something which I love to do very much. Take the time off to enjoy life. But I have no $$, so I still have to work. Haha.
Anybody out there wants to hire me or have any job recommendations? I’m available full-time in months June and July’2011. ;D
